How Dental Implants Work To Restore Your Smile

If you have heard of implants and want to get them but do not understand how they work, then this is the perfect article for you.

Missing teeth, partial or complete dentures can make you feel conscious when you smile and undermine your confidence. Moreover, it can lead to difficulty while chewing and eating, bite issues, jaw problems and eventually affect your health in general. Dental implants are a permanent solution to missing teeth. They are designed and manufactured to be extremely strong and last a lifetime.

It is important to understand how an implant works since it will be permanently placed in your jaw and be a part of your body. This knowledge ensures that you are more at ease and positive about the outcome.

There are three parts of a dental implant restoration: implant, abutment, crown/dental restoration.

This is a fixture or screw made of titanium that is embedded in the jaw bone and acts as the root portion of the tooth. It is fixed below the gum line and will be seen on X-rays.  It is important that it fuses with the jaw bone by a process called ‘Osseointegration’ (“osseo” means bone; “integrate” means to join or fuse). Osseointegration is an extremely crucial step in the success of the implant. Titanium is the chosen material as it is biocompatible and accepted by the human body and has been used in medical implants for a long time. It does not corrode and easily bonds with the bone.

If the bone is not of optimal density and thickness to bear the load of the implant and stabilize it, then bone grafting is done with either the person’s own bone, artificial or cadaver bone at the time of tooth removal or before having an implant placed. This can help preserve and even re-grow and strengthen your bone structure. This is followed by a healing period of four to six months after which the implant is placed to allow bone to re-grow and fuse to the implant.

All On 4 dental implant is a treatment technique of placing implants. If you are looking to replace an entire jaw of missing teeth, then this is the best method. Instead of using an implant for every missing tooth your dentist will place just four implants, two in the front and two in the back of your mouth in any given jaw. So for people who do not have a single tooth in their mouth, it will be four in the top jaw and four in the bottom jaw. On top of these implants, either a denture or a bridge can be placed. Thus you save time as well as money.

It is a small portion that looks like a tree stump that is attached to the implant and lies around and above the gum level. After osseintegration process is achieved, the abutment is screwed to the implant fixture. This part connects the final dental crown or other dental work to the implant.

The Crown (or final restoration):

This is the part that sits on top of the abutment and becomes a part of your smile. It looks like a natural tooth. It is either cemented or screwed to the abutment if the final product is a crown or a bridge. If it is a denture then it is snapped onto the abutment.

Crowns are made of different material like porcelain, porcelain fused to metal to match the shade and shape of your natural teeth.
