5 common foods that give children cavities

As a parent, you want to protect your child from all sorts of pain and discomfort, including dental cavities which can be painful. Good oral hygiene is important; however, your child’s diet is another factor responsible for dental problems. It’s best to prevent them. Certain snacks and foods can contribute to cavities. Here is the list of foods that can cause cavities in your child and should be avoided.

1. Sticky Candy

Candy is nothing but sugar. It is sticky and gets easily caught and stuck in the small fissures present naturally on teeth and in the spaces between teeth. This trapped sugar is the perfect food for bacteria to grow and produce acid, which gradually weakens the tooth’s hard enamel leading to tooth decay. So, candy including the hard-boiled lollypops, sticky caramel, chewy fruit roll-ups, etc are some of the worst foods for children’s teeth.

2. Fruit juice

It is a common misconception that packaged fruit juice is healthy. Unfortunately, the reality is that it is devoid of the original fruit’s nutrients and fibre and instead laden with sugar. Also, if your child is drinking it out of a sippy cup, this sugar will stay on their teeth longer leading to cavities. So, switch to water or plain milk instead. In case your child feels like having juice, dilute it with water to decrease the sugar content and make them drink through a straw.

3. Starchy snacks

Chips, crackers, bread, pasta are made out of white flour and hence full of starch which when eaten transforms into sugar. It can stick to your child’s teeth, leading to tooth decay. So, try to avoid such foods. Replace it with whole wheat food items, which contain complex carbohydrates such as whole-wheat bread, pasta, multigrain foods. These will keep your child full for longer as well.

4. Aerated drinks

Soda and other carbonated beverages contain acids in a high proportion that can eat away the enamel of teeth. The non-diet ones are extremely high in sugar. So it’s best that your child completely avoids them. 

5. Acidic fruits

Citrus fruits such as lemon, oranges, lime, although are a rich source of vitamin C, also contain acid, which is harmful and can erode the enamel of teeth. Such weakened teeth are more vulnerable to decay.
