Painless Root Canal Treatment

Dr. Kakul Dey (MDS Endodontist) on Root Canal Treatment

A root canal treatment sounds so common... A term almost every common man understands and gets scared. But with 8 years of experience as an Endodontist (Root canal specialist) I still feel each root canal case is a challenge simply because we are trying to save a tooth which otherwise needs to be extracted.

Day in & day out I get patients with pain in teeth requiring root canal. They say “I already have pain & root canal treatment will add to my pain, instead please remove my teeth.”

Its only lack of awareness & the fact that we have 32 teeth, that removing 1 or 2 wouldn’t make any difference makes them say this. My only piece of advice to them is that, root canal treatment doesn't cause pain, it only relives pain. Modern root canal therapy is relatively pain less & most of the cases are done in a single sitting.

Another common query that is posed, post a root canal treatment, is about putting a cap (Dental restoration) over the root canal treated tooth. Patients try to avoid this part for reasons best known to them. It is my earnest request to all my readers that if you are not putting a cap then it is useless to spend any amount for root canal therapy as a root canal treated tooth is easily prone to fracture. Capping it will only protect it for almost a life time.
